The Importance Of Business Cards

Filed under: Marketing,Printing,Small Business — by Christine Reuter @ 10:05 pm

In a way business cards are like resumes; it determines the perception of someone’s first impression about you. Basically, it holds information that differentiates you from the rest of the pile. So how important is this single piece of paper? Well, a resume gets you in the door so its contents is vital to your future and career. A business card on the other hand is the only means for a person to contact you once you’re gone; it sells your services or product after the initial contact point. Thus, the information you include on a business card is very important to the development of a new relationship, whether it be with a client, vendor, or potential business partner.

First, always make sure there are multiple ways a person can contact you. This means include at least two if not all of the following information: email address, phone number & extension if applicable, cell phone, and address.

Second, introduce yourself. Yes, it is important to include your name but also remember to include what it is that you or your company does. Many company names don’t exactly explain what the company does or the products that they offer. A person who picks up your business card should know what industry you’re in and what they need you for. Remember not to get into too much detail. Thats what a website is for. If possible, always display your url so they can look up more information if desired.

Third, get quality printing for your business cards. Remember that your business card is a representation of yourself; it influences your perceived image as well as the image of the company you work for or the services you provide. If you don’t believe me then take a stack of business cards and hold all of them in your hand. Then select the ones that stand out to you. I can almost guarantee that the particular cards you selected are of higher quality than the others left in the pile. Below are a few features that determines the quality of a card:

  • Colors. There are two main factors that influence the color of your business card: the printing job & the paper it was printed on. You will notice a color variation if you print the exact same design with two different companies. The printing technology used as well as the printing process determines whether or not the colors of a card come out vibrant or dull.
  • Paper Stock. The size of the paper stock determines its thickness. You can automatically tell the difference between a cheap flimsy paper stock from a thick one simply by holding it in your hands.
  • Design. Make sure the images you put on your business card falls under the right resolution required for a standard business card size. If the image you used is too small then no matter where you get your cards printed, the image will turn out looking terrible due to pixelation.
